How to make an FOI request

How to make an FOI request

The Freedom of Information Act 2014 gives everyone the right to access records held by public bodies, while balancing the public interest and the right to privacy.

Before you apply: The Courts Service operates a publication scheme that routinely makes information available. Please check that section first to see if the information you need is already published.

How to apply

Make your request in writing and state that it is made under the Freedom of Information Act 2014. In your request, please include:

  • a clear description of the records you are seeking;
  • how you would like to receive the records (for example, photocopy or email);
  • a telephone number or email address in case we need to clarify your request.

You can apply by post or email using the contact details below. We will respond within 20 working days from the date your request is received.

Your rights under FOI

  • Access to records held by the Courts Service, subject to the Act’s exemptions.
  • Correction of personal information about you that is inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading.
  • Access to reasons for decisions made by the Courts Service that directly affect you.

Records covered by the Act

  • All records held by the Courts Service that contain your personal information.
  • All other records created by the Courts Service since 21 April 1998 (subject to the Act).
  • Any additional record needed to understand a current record.
