The practice and procedure of the High Court is regulated mainly by the Rules of the Superior Court 1986 and by practice directions issued by the President of the High Court. 

Various types of High Court proceedings are issued (initiated) in the Central Office of the High Court which is located in the Four Courts in Dublin.

You (if you are conducting your own case) or your legal representative may attend at the Central Office of the High Court to issue or file any documents in your case.

Alternatively, you (or your legal representative) may file your documents by post, or through a document exchange service (DX), or by depositing them in a box provided at the office. See information on non-personal filing.


The Central Office will no longer accept letters of authority, provided by parties, authorising a person to view a file, to file documents or to collect documents.

Litigants attending should be in a position to provide proof of identity if requested.

Proceedings in the following types of cases are not issued in the Central Office, but in the relevant High Court offices as listed below:-

Probate motions are dealt with by the Probate Office

Wardship petitions and motions are dealt with by the Office of Wards of Court 

Bankruptcy summonses and motions are dealt with by the Office of the Examiner of the High Court

Matters dealt with in the High Court can be quite technical and it is advisable to consult a solicitor about these matters.
